Engaging in sex while you are pregnant is not as harmful to the baby as most people think. Sex is a normal part of a couple’s relationship it is even the main reason why you are in a pregnant state to start of. Having sex while you are pregnant is not contraindicated just as long as your pregnancy is free of complications. Some women worry about the penetrating action and movement in sex might harm the baby inside. This is not true since the fetus is protected by the placenta cushioning the baby to bumps and movements the mother receives besides the penetrating penis will not reach the cervix enough to cause harm to the baby.

Abstain from sex during pregnancy if the following complications are present.

  • Prone to miscarriage by family history or has experience of miscarriage in the past
  •  Presence of placenta previa
  • Premature labor contractions
  •  Bleeding from the vaginal opening
  •  Bloody vaginal discharge
  • Cervix is dilated
  •  Membranes have ruptured
  • STDs
  • Multiple births

There are favorable positions you can use that can be comfortable for couples. As the pregnant mother’s belly grows you will find the need to utilize a more favorable position. Lying side by side with your partner is beneficial as this position promotes comfort to the mother with her enlarged abdomen not getting in the way. Try to avoid the missionary position as this provides pressure to the mother’s abdomen.

Sex during pregnancy can be enjoyed by the couple depending on their mood at the certain time. Some pregnant women feel an increased libido in the second trimester and some feels cold towards the idea of sex approaching the 3rd trimester. Some may experience increased breast sensitivity and tenderness that can be uncomfortable. Blood flow is also increased in the pelvic area causing it to become engorged and sometimes contributes to increase sexual stimulation while for others it can be painful.  It is always good that couples are in the mood and comfortable with the idea. Communication is essential between couples to find out what other ways can fulfill the other without compromising one’s preferences.

When pregnant a woman should avoid having sex with multiple partners and those with unknown background. The likelihood of contracting a sexually transmitted disease is high. Caution is advised to prevent genital warts and other infections such as herpes, Chlamydia and Gonorrhea.

If in doubt on whether to have sex during pregnancy it is best to talk with your doctor. Have your partner with you when you discuss this. It would facilitate an open communication between couples. Try to explore ways on how to satisfy each one if sex is contraindicated. Provide your wife a sensual massage, go out to an intimate dinner, stay home and cuddle in bed. This is the perfect time to be creative in thinking of ways you can do something special for your wife who is carrying your child.
