Urinary tract infection is a very common occurrence in pregnancy. Defined as bacterial infection in the urinary tract, women are prone to have this condition much more when they are pregnant.  The reason why woman are more destined to have the infection as compared to men is because of her anatomy. Females have shorter urethra making the bacteria having easier access to the bladder to cause infections.

Treating urinary tract infection during pregnancy is very important. Not just because of the great discomfort it brings but also for the complication it can give the mother and her baby. The pregnant woman may feel a variety of symptoms when she has the infections. Pain during urination, frequent urination, mucous and blood components in the urine, fever and chills, foul smelling urine, feeling of pain during intercourse, and painful cramps in the abdomen are some of the discomforts that the pregnant mother may encounter.

There are safe treatment modalities that are proven to treat urinary tract infections in pregnancy. Also these treatments have no or minimal adverse effects to both mother and baby.

  • Drinking more than 8 glasses of water. Water helps eliminate and flush away bacteria when one urinates. That is why increasing water intake when one has the infection is very important.
  • An intake of cranberry juice promise very good effects in the treatment of the condition. When the mother drinks 6 to 8 glasses of pure and natural cranberry juice every day, she is not only treating the disease, but also preventing its reoccurrence.
  • Wearing of light and comfortable clothing also helps in relieving discomfort. It is important that the mother can move freely and not feel too much pressure especially in her inguinal region. Cotton underwear is also a must to be worn because they promote good air circulation. Wearing of skimpy clothes and tight fitting underwear like thongs may cause more discomforts.
  • Practice good personal hygiene. Showering everyday in clean water and washing the genital region with a mild soap is a must. Avoid bathing in tubs because they promote bacterial entry to the urinary tract.
  • Avoid eating caffeine and carbonated food and beverages. Coffee, soda, tea, and its preparations may cause great discomfort. These foods further irritate the bladder aggravating the situation.
  • Religiously take the prescribed antibiotic medication by your doctor. Although the mother may have apprehensions whether taking the antibiotic, it is very important that she is well informed that these medications offer no or minimal effects to her and the baby. There is no need to worry because there are many antibiotic preparations that are proven to be safe to use in pregnancy.

When the pregnant woman feels like she has the symptoms for urinary tract infections, it is best that she seeks medical consultation the soonest time possible. Failure to treat urinary tract infection can lead to more serious and life threatening conditions like cystitis and pyelonephritis.
