Pregnancy is period in a woman’s life wherein she can say that she’s having the time of her life. Normally, majority of women go in to pregnancy in perfect health and have a normal pregnancy and safe delivery. But sad to say, not all women go through pregnancy the usual way. Complications may happen to a number of expectant mothers. When this occurs, severe pain, emotional burden, and financial obstacles challenge not just the mother but her family as well.
Complications during pregnancy should be taken seriously. If not treated or managed, dreaded complications may harm the mother and the baby. It may lead to lifelong defects to the baby and possibly death to both mother and infant. The mother should be properly informed on what deviates from the normal during the entire pregnancy. Some serious complications go unnoticed like gestational diabetes. The condition is characterized by high blood sugar levels during pregnancy. The mother may not experience life threatening symptoms but her baby maybe in great danger. The condition causes the baby to be born big for gestational age, manifest jaundice, and have hypoglycemia. The condition is highly preventable as long as the mother takes good care of her health. Lifestyle change and diet modification is highly advised to avoid its occurrence.
Ectopic pregnancy is characterized by fetal implantation which grows outside the uterus. In most cases the implantation happens in the fallopian tubes, but it can also occur in the intestine, cervix, and ovaries. The condition is connected with previous sexually transmitted disease infections like Chlamydia. The zygote grows for 6 to 12 weeks, but normally doesn’t last longer than that. It ruptures the part where it is implanted causing massive bleeding. Stabbing pain in the abdomen may also be felt. Laparoscopy is normally performed to stop the bleeding blood vessels, and to repair affected organ of implantation.
Eclampsia is also one of the most serious complications during pregnancy. The cause of the condition is unknown and mostly happens to first time mothers aging less than 20 years and older than for forty years old. This condition is considered to be the most severe form of hypertension during pregnancy. The mother experiences high blood pressure, cerebral edema happens, renal failure, and collapse of the circulatory system. Often the fetus dies whenever the mother is in such condition. But the condition is highly preventable just as long as early management is done.
Fetal death would be the most painful complication of pregnancy. The condition may be brought by immunologic causes, abnormal chromosome formation, congenital problems, and complications from any maternal illness. If death occurs before quickening, the mother may not know that something is wrong to her baby. No fetal movements may indicate fetal death. If the mother doesn’t feel any movements she should seek medical attention. If not delivered the earliest time possible, she may be poisoned due to toxemia. Her life may be in great danger as well.
Pregnancy complications can be prevented. Proper prenatal care, lifestyle modifications, and a happy pregnancy will lead to a healthy mother and baby.
