Food and Nutrition Myths

When the time to get pregnant comes, many myths still survive in your head and you may be wondering if they worked for your mother and if it is your duty to follow her example and beliefs to guarantee a robust, healthy newborn.

The most generalized wrong concept is the well-known myth of "Eat up, because now and you are eating for two", which is absolutely wrong. During pregnancy, however, your body will need up to 300 extra calories and more than that will lead you to an unhealthy overweight gain.

On the opposite side, there is another myth suggesting that you become an obsessive "weight watcher" to avoid extra pounds. Overweight or underweight none of these are signs of overall health and both can lead to health problems for you and particularly for your baby.

Forget about having a scale around to weigh yourself each and every time you eat. Watch that you are eating your required daily allowance of nutrients. It is also not true that if you do not eat enough the baby will take the extra fat from your body and your muscles will wear down making you weaker.

Babies are built from protein bodies used to develop tissues, so if you are not eating enough protein, the body does not store enough for you and baby. However, the baby will not take what it needs from your body. There are many myths out there and if you are unsure, you should ask your doctor's advice.
