Perineal massage is the act of massaging the mother’s perineal area to prepare her for the labor process and giving birth. Episiotomy is done in the area between the vagina and anus. This process is done to promote easy passage of the baby out of the mother’s birth canal. Perineal massage has been used nowadays to lessen effects brought about by episiotomy and the delivery process.
Perineal massage is usually done as part of the mother’s everyday bath regimen. It is made by putting cold oils such as olive oil directly on to the perineum. The mother does firm pressure in to her perineum in letter U strokes. The routine is done for ten minutes a day. To have maximum effectiveness, performing perineal massages four to six weeks before the mother’s expected date of delivery should be done. Other mothers do perennial massage with their husbands or partners as preparation for sexual intercourse.
What are the benefits of perineal massages?
- The massage prepares and makes the mother become acquainted with stretching sensation as she will be delivering the baby. When the mother has a clue on what sensations she may feel, she becomes less anxious, hence delivery and labor process is shortened.
- When the mother’s partner is involved in perennial massage, he becomes more connected with the pregnancy and delivery process. The massage may also help the father to become more appreciative and be hands on the pregnancy, especially during labor and delivery where his emotional support is needed the most.
- The perineum muscles become more elastic and flexible when occasionally massaged promoting fast healing and recovery in child birth. Chances of tearing of the perineum are also reduced.
- Relaxation techniques are also brought about by these massages. The mother who opts to perform these routine at night may be benefited from the soothing effects it gives which also promotes good night’s rest. When a mother is fully rested and out of stress, her baby’s growth also benefits from it.
Perineal massage gives a lot benefits. However, before the mother decides to perform it, she should inform her health care provider first. Some conditions, like if the mother has vaginal warts, or herpes infections, contraindicated to these massages. The doctor would often demonstrate or instruct the mother the proper steps to do in perennial massage. When not done proper, perennial massage may cause urinary tract infections, which can give great discomfort to the mother.
