Some conditions may require the mother to be on bed rest. Example of such is placenta previa, complicated types of pregnancy induced hypertension; mother’s who have history of bleeding, incompetent cervix and mothers who have low lying placenta. Being not able to walk around may make the mother feel depressed, especially when she is used to be very active in her activities of daily living. Although the mother is instructed by her health care provider to be on best rest, certain work out routines can still be done to promote proper blood circulation and preventing blood clot formation especially in the mother’s lower extremities.

Certain exercises can still be done even if the mother is required to be on bed rest. Some of the simple, safe and easy to perform exercises are:

  • Squeezing on stress balls may be a good exercise to do. These will not only promote muscle strength, this simple exercise may also lessen the mother’s boredom and anxiety.
  • The mother can still perform active exercises like lifting legs, rotating ones arms, legs, and feet.
  • Kegel’s maneuver can also be done to practice the pelvic floor in delivery. The exercise is done by contracting and then releasing the muscles in the vagina, just like when holding urine. This is very effective in promoting muscle tone which is needed in child birth process.
  • Performing ankle circles are also done to enhance proper circulation in the area.
  • Doing exercise with a partner may be best for some mothers under bed rest. A nurse, physical therapist, family member, or the husband may assist the mother in performing certain exercises. They may aid the mother in performing arms, legs, and head movements.
  • Proper deep breathing exercises also aid in proper circulation, and will help the mother have the proper breathing techniques needed in labor and delivery.
  • After performing these exercises, a glass of water or juice should be taken to hydrate the body after the exercise.

Although some exercises are said to be safe to be done by pregnant mothers who are required to be on bed rest, it is always best that the mother consults her healthcare provider before performing them. When not performed well, some of these exercises may bring harm rather than giving benefits. Before doing these exercises, have them approved or ask your doctor as to what exercises are best to do when in bed rest.
