What is infertility? It refers to the biological inability of a person to contribute to conception or it is simply failure to conceive after a year of unprotected intercourse. These affects approximately 10- 15% of reproductive-age couples and the overall prevalence has been stable during the past five decades. Nowadays, family planning is being prioritized. Women who doesn’t want to become pregnant before the age of 30 or women who postpone their childbearing until their 30’s and beyond may have difficulty in conceiving and have an increased risk of miscarriage. Fecundability rate (the rate or probability of achieving a pregnancy each month) are lower in older women and higher in younger women.

Infertility is caused by a lot of factors. For female factor infertility, it is subdivided into several categories namely: cervical or uterine factor infertility, tubal factors, ovarian factor infertility, advanced age and peritoneal factor infertility while the male factor infertility is also subdivided into three factors: Pretesticular, Testicular and Posttesticular etiologies. There are also other factors that may affect both sexes. Occupational /environmental factors, toxic effects related to tobacco/ marijuana/ other drugs, compulsive exercise and inadequate diet associated with extreme weight loss or weight gain are considered infertility inducing factors.

On the other hand, Chinese herbs have been available and documented in the treatment of infertility and other pregnancy related problems since 200 A.D and numerous Chinese researches have highlighted the importance and benefits. Men and women who use Chinese herbs increased their likelihood of pregnancy by 70%. Chinese herbs are combination of more than 15 different herbs derived from roots, bark, flowers, stem, leaves and fruits, creating different opportunity for possible treatments. Practitioners trained in combining herbs create different formulas and treatments based on the individual’s need that is why choosing this kind of treatment is not that easy to achieve. A practitioner including naturopaths, acupuncturists and modern doctors with training or familiarity in herbs has been shown to increase fertility in both sexes.

Using these herbs has several advantages. Chinese herbs stimulate the body’s natural healing potential by treating the possible causes rather than the symptoms manifested. These herbs decrease the undesired side effects and if you prefer to choose medical fertility programs, Chinese herbs can be used together with the western medicine to strengthen and balance the body so that necessary medical procedures are effective.
