Do you ever wonder why all these years, you and your partner haven’t yet conceived? Your doing everything you can just to have a baby and yet every effort fails. Facing infertility problems can be difficult for both couple. It often affects the physical and emotional aspect. It is even worse when you have problems in getting a diagnosis or if one or both (couple) will refuse to have a check up or thorough assessment because of some misunderstanding or unresolved issues. Both men and women throughout the world are affected by the infertility issue. It seems to be a stupid question, but what does fertility means? Fertility is the ability of an individual to reproduce through copulation. A healthy male discharges 50 million sperm per ejaculation or around 20 million sperm per milliliter of semen. Many men suffer from infertility issues, not because of the disease or illness but because of certain lifestyle factors and issues.
Factors that affect sperm health and male fertility include the following.
1. Cigarette smoking or tobacco use
We all know that smoking can is dangerous to your health. A single stick contains a lot of hazardous chemicals and components which may cause severe problems in the future. Smoking regardless of the brand or the materials used can cause vasoconstriction of the blood vessels thus reducing the flow of blood or eventually blocked the blood circulation in the long run. Reducing the amount of blood circulation to a specific body part can lead to lack of cell nutrients and oxygenated blood which may eventually lead to necrosis (cell death). According to study, smoking can also affect the sperms condition.
2. Alcohol Consumption
Alcohol abuse can lead to lead to a lot of problems regarding your health. Your liver is the most affected organ since all the substances in your body will definitely pass through this organ. If left untreated, this can lead to liver cirrhosis (cancer of the liver) and other possible complications. This can also affect sperm production and sperm quality because too much alcohol consumption can poison the sperm cells.
3. Previous surgery / operations
Previous surgical operations and conditions involving the groin area such as in varicocele may affect sperm production. This condition (varicocele) is one of the most common causes of male infertility.
4. Hot tubs and Hot baths
Any alteration or changes in temperature may affect sperm production and motility. Excessive exposure to high temperature has been linked to poor sperm quality or eventually it may lower your sperm count.
5. Use of recreational drugs
Drug abuse may have some various effects on our body. These drugs are definitely dangerous and may pose harmful effects. Marijuana, cocaine and other recreational drugs can affect sperm production and motility. The use of these drugs can also be a sign of other problems such as depression and anxiety.
6. Chemical or toxin exposure
Individuals who are exposed to some chemicals or toxins may have an effect on the fertility issue. Avoiding these toxins may help in obtaining healthy sperms and a healthy body.
7. Activities
There are certain activities which may affect sperm production and quality. Excessive exercise, bicycle riding, working in a hot environment, prolonged sitting and even the use of tight underpants can increase the core temperature which may affect the sperm production
8. Certain medications and chemotherapy drug
Medications used in treating and controlling chronic conditions including chemotherapy drugs can affect sperm production and it may even cause permanent infertility. Consult your doctor prior to drug use and discuss the possible option before treatment.
