Most of us thought acne breakouts are a teen’s problem and that it’s a thing of the past. But for some pregnant women they find themselves reliving the acne breakouts and pimple problems experience all over again.
Increase in pregnancy hormones is the primary cause of acne breakouts among pregnant women usually in the first trimester. Progesterone increases oil gland activity which produces excess oil in the skin that accounts for pimple breakouts. For some women this “oily” skin is what makes them appear to have a “glow”. Unfortunately for those who are not so lucky acne breakouts can also appear on the body.
Acne can certainly affect one’s self esteem especially in a time where one has to cope with other physical symptoms of pregnancy like weight gain and facial discoloration. Although being pregnant is wonderful in itself suffering from acne will still be uncomfortable. Before you go off buying over the counter drugs to treat pimples visit your doctor first to check what acne treatments are safe to use.
Here are ways to take care of your skin to prevent pimple breakouts and avoid over the counter acne treatments.
- Increase hydration by drinking at least 8 to 10 glasses of water daily. This will keep the skin moisturized and healthy
- Do not prick pimples even if it’s hard to resist you must avoid touching and most of all pricking pimples as this will only lead to its spread and cause scarring
- Wash your face twice daily. Avoid harsh soaps and washing excessively as this may dry the skin causing irritation that may lead to pimple production
- Use an oil free moisturizer to help keep skin soft
- Eat a healthy and balanced diet that is rich in vitamins and minerals
- Exercise regularly to improve blood circulation
Acne will gradually clear up as you reach your due date. Although outcomes may differ for every individual acne breakouts usually improves after the first trimester. For some women acne clears up a few months after delivery while others will have a period of clear skin and then acne breakout will happen again.
If acne gets worse and out of control medication may be required. Be sure to check first with your doctor on what acne medications are safe to use in pregnancy, Most acne medications like Isotretinoin, Retin-A and tetracycline are effective in treating acne but are contraindicated for pregnant women. Accutane or Isotretinoin causes birth defects particularly in the heat and central nervous system. Acne can be managed without resorting to medication besides the risks are far too dangerous. The best way is still the natural way of caring for your skin. Cleanse, hydrate and eat healthy are the pillars of a glowing and pimple free skin.
