Conceiving a baby is a joyful moment every couple dreams of for it is a step in building a family. Sadly in every four pregnancies there is a 1% chance of miscarriage. Miscarriage is characterized by the death of a fetus before it reached its 24th week of gestation. After the 24th week the death is termed as ‘stillbirth”.

The cause of a miscarriage is unknown. There are different factors which contribute to the risk of having a miscarriage and these include genetic abnormalities, problems with the uterus, immune-related disorders and premature membrane ruptures. The usual symptoms of a miscarriage are bleeding clots from the vaginal opening, blood discharge, abdominal cramps and back pain.

It is painful for the couple to experience such loss of the anticipated baby. The grieving process sometimes needs couples to attend therapy to cope to the tremendous loss. They develop feelings of guilt for not taking care of the baby. But is there really a way to prevent a miscarriage? Several researches on vitamin supplementation for preventing miscarriage has been conducted to evaluate if miscarriage can be lessened.

Here are some supplements that are evaluated in some clinical trials and have shown to have some effect in preventing miscarriages.

Minerals and multivitamins – to get the most advantage and acquire all possible nutrients essential for the early development of your baby a multivitamin is ingested. It contains a portion of everything so you won’t miss out on any important vitamins and minerals.

Folic Acid – is very essential in a pregnant woman. Folic acid is advised to be taken as early as planning to have a baby. It is now incorporated in milk with labels saying “high folic acid content’. Research has proved that it prevents spina bifida, a condition wherein the lower neural tube does not close completely exposing the spinal cord to the amniotic fluid. Most babies born with this condition develops other complications such as hydrocephalus and meningitis.

Vitamin E – Aside from its benefits to the skin and anti-oxidant effect it can also thin the blood and prevent clotting. Having a good blood circulation will facilitate good transport of nutrients to the baby decreasing the rate of complications that can cause miscarriage.

Vitamin B12- research shows that vitamin B12 and Folic acid controls homocysteine in the blood, a component that destroys the lining of the blood vessels. A high level of homocysteine is found in mothers who experienced miscarriages.

Zinc – promotes healthy development of chromosomes and cell division. That is why is it beneficial to be supplemented with zinc when a baby grows inside of you.

Selenium – research studies shows that women who had miscarriages have low selenium levels. Selenium is a potent anti-oxidant that prevents damage to DNA and chromosomal development which is essential in the fetus in its early stage of growth and development.

Taking these natural supplements is only advised after you have consulted with your physician. You need to be evaluated if your pregnancy is safe and above supplements can be taken. Taking these supplements cannot guarantee that you won’t have a miscarriage as a portion of its cause is still unknown. Still nothing beats a healthy diet, moderate exercise and a stress free environment in taking care of your baby early in pregnancy.
